My week from hell is now over, praise the lord! I really did try to stay positive, but I couldn't nor could anyone else who had the same job as I. My job as a janior consisted of doing laps around an expo center for 12 hours with a hoakie in my hand searching for goldfish crackers to suck up. Four times around was at least a mile, so I am sure you can imagine I did quite a bit of walking within those 12 hours. When the NBA jam session (the show that was going on at the expo center) ended at 10pm everynight, my shift had to do the deep cleaning so that the place was beautiful for the next day. Some how Steve and I got put in charge of the local labor FILO had hired (mexicans and Guatemalans who spoke no English). Yes, Steve speaks Spanish fluently, I don't. My main directional phrases were, "Sacar la basura. solo cuando lleno, " and "aspridor abrir." My cleaning team did take a little longer to get things done at first due to the time in took me to try and translate what they were saying to me and what I needed to say to them. However, we quickly got a routine down and my local laborers became some the coolest people I hung out with all week. My Spanish improved a bit and we were able to joke around. When my Spanish wasn't so good, I would exagerate with hand gestures and everyone would crack up laughing.
Besides my local laborers, I did meet a few other people that I am sure I will keep in touch with. We were all miserable with body aches and mindless work, so we had to keep eachother entertained. One of the games we came up with was called "people watching bingo." Everyday I came to work with a list of 5 things to look for. For example; muffin top, matching couple, grill, true red head, thong. Everyone got a list, and we all had walki-talkies, so when ever you'd see one on the list you'd let the others know through the radio. The first to get all five won. The rest of the janitors had to buy that person a drink sometime during the week. Other things I did with in my 12 hour day; pretended I was a smoker so I could go outside for a while, hid in stairwell, played with the trash compactor.
Other reasons FILO and this week sucked so much; we don't get paid hourly, so they could have us there for how ever long they wanted and the pay would not change. Our so called $35/day perdium was not a perdium at all. The $280 we recieved for food for the week was actually taken out of our pay. Originally we were told we were making $750/week, then we were told $100/day. Then, if you take which ever total it is and subtract the $280, that means we made shit for a ridiculous amount of work and hours. I should have learned my lesson when I did my Disney World Internship, but no.... I had to go and do this as well and I got screwed again.
All in all, this was a very horrible experience and I would not recommend it to anyone.
